ICON6 ANNOUNCEMENT

Dear ICON Colleagues:

With great pleasure, I am happy to announce the new board of directors for ICON6, the next national Illustration Conference. Serving as president of ICON5 these past few years has been an incredible opportunity to become better acquainted with even more of the illustration community. It has also been an opportunity to continue growing ICON in ways that include continued success of the Roadshow, tours and workshops, networking opportunities with art directors, and reaching out to our European colleagues. A number of these initiatives were created during the making of ICON4 and because they proved to be successful were further developed for ICON5.

In addition, the ICON5 board strived to bring information about the then-changing issues of Orphan Works through two of the conference sessions and provided a device for speaking directly with your representatives with the Putting A Face on Orphan Works postcards. We also made a greener conference, reducing mailings by use of eBlasts to keep everyone informed. Additionally, ICON will continue to use the ICON5 website for news and information between conferences.

I'm grateful for having had this opportunity to serve the illustration community through ICON, an invaluable forum for the voice of illustration. The entire ICON5 board is looking forward to supporting the new board, a fantastic group of individuals. We hope you will too! And we look forward to ICON6 in 2010. Martha Rich will be serving as the chair of the Transition Team which will meet this November to begin planning.

I am also extremely pleased to announce another fantastic development for ICON. Beginning this month, the ICON organization will have a director, Mark Heflin. The director position was the result of strategic planning done by the ICON4 board of directors in 2005. During the following year, a legacy committee was formed to determine the position description and make nominee recommendations. In mid-2006, I approached Mark about this position and we both felt he would be better equipped to make his decision if he served on the ICON board. The ICON5 board unanimously elected him to serve as our Marketing/PR chair and Roadshow coordinator, which he did brilliantly.

In his position as director, Mark will oversee many of the day-to-day needs of ICON and facilitate the boards needs, though he will not have a voting position. He will also serve on the Transition Team with Martha and Fernanda Cohen both of whom will continue on the ICON6 board.

The new ICON6 board members are [in alphabetical order] Alex Bostic, Soojin Buzelli, Troy Doolittle, Michael Fleishman, Andy Hayes, John Hendrix, Melanie Reim, Mark Todd, and Jaime Zollars.
The ICON6 board will announce their advisors at a later date.

Last but not least, the entire ICON5 board wishes to thank Alyce Heath for her enormous contributions to ICON over the last 5 conferences. She is the patient and helpful voice you speak with if you call the ICON office. Many of you may not know about her acting career, but she has been quietly building this for a number of years [ask to see her amazing headshots!]. She is interested in dedicating more of her time to her career and has decided to reduce her time commitment to ICON, though I don't think she'll ever really get the hook out. Her exact role will be determined in the following months as Mark takes on his directorship and she works more on the public relations side of ICON and on her acting career. Please wish her well in her endeavors!

Congratulations to all!

Whitney Sherman, President of ICON5
