1. The ICON5 Board of Directors

    ICON5 has a distinguished board of directors, comprised of many of the best illustrators and designers in the field today. They are all recognized as significant contributors to the profession. And many believe that teaching is an important part of their professional activity. They are: Whitney Sherman, Ross MacDonald, Nancy Stahl, Martha Rich, Julia Breckenreid, Fernanda Cohen, Isabelle Dervaux, Von Glitschka, Mark Heflin,

  2. Whitney Sherman

    Trained as a photographer, self-taught in illustration and design, Whitney Sherman curated Seamless : Culture Meets Culture for ICON4 including Yuko Shimizu, Christopher Silas Neal, Sara Varon and Andrew Liang. She has also coordinated and produced the exhibitions Another Voice: Political Illustration from Progressive, 1981-1999 with Patrick JB Flynn and Comics on the Verge with Paul Candler and George Ciscle, both at the Maryland Institute College of Art.
                 Sherman’s work has been exhibited internationally including the Design Museum/London, Axis Gallery/Tokyo and the Israel Museum and was recently included in the Rockwell Museum exhibition Picturing Health. Her USPS Breast Cancer Research stamp, the longest running postal issue ever, will be issued in 10 selected European countries increasing the $50 million already raised for research in the US. Her illustration work has received recognition from Communication Arts, Print, Society of Illustrators, American Illustration, and the Society of Publication Designers, and she has juried for the Society’s annual twice. Along with her studio work, she has produced a line of hand painted ceramics and a self-published a book of photographs from France called Remembering Rochefort and a series-in-progress of photographic images called Multiply, Add + Subtract. Sherman is the Chair of Illustration at MICA. She lives in affordable Baltimore with her handsome husband Paul and runt cat Seven. Her daughter Bryn Freeman is a graphic designer.

  3. Ross MacDonald

    Ross MacDonald is a contributing editor of the Virginia Quarterly Review, and is on the masthead of Vanity Fair magazine as a contributing artist. His illustrations have also appeared in many magazines and newspapers including The New Yorker, Newsweek, Time, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Wall Street Journal, The London Sunday Telegraph, Atlantic Monthly and Harpers, and he has written and illustrated humor pieces for many of the same publications, as well as several children’s books.
                 As prop maker and consultant on historical design, paper, printing and writing instruments, he worked on the movies Seabiscuit, Van Helsing, Duplex, The Legend of Zorro, The Alamo, Infamous, Mr. Brooks, King of California, National Treasure Book of Secrets and others, providing many of the documents, maps, books and letters. He Lives in Connecticut with his wife, 2 kids, 2 dogs, 3 cats and a large collection of 19th century type and printing equipment.

  4. Nancy Stahl

    During her three decades of illustrating, Nancy Stahl’s work has become woven into our culture. Assignments that have ranged from editorial, packaging, and postage stamps, to corporate identity and television commercials, have brought her work into the mainstream of everyday visuals.
        Her illustrations have appeared in Illustrators in America by Walt Reed, Rolling Stone: The Illustrated Portraits and Design Impact: A History of Art Center College of Design, and articles featuring her work have appeared in Communication Arts and Step-by-Step magazines.
                 She has taught illustration at the School of Visual Arts and co-teaches a masters class at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She was an instructor in the Independent Study Masters Degree program at Syracuse University and now has the same position at Hartford Art School / University of Hartford. She speaks at colleges throughout the country and gave a three-day computer workshop in Hamburg, Germany, coinciding with an exhibit of The Art of der Spiegel.
                 Nancy lives in New York City where she pursues her hobbies of computerized knitting and computerized embroidery, hoping to make them viable illustration techniques.

  5. Martha Rich

    Originally from Philadelphia, Martha Rich lived the typical, suburban life - until she followed her husband to Los Angeles where, just short of a picket fence and 2.5 children her average American life unraveled. To cope with divorce, fate lead her to an illustration class taught by the Clayton Brothers. They persuaded her to ditch the pantyhose world, quit her cubicle job at Universal Studios and join the world of art. She graduated with honors from Art Center College of Design and is currently based in Pasadena obsessively painting underwear, wigs, lobsters, and Loretta Lynn. She also teaches at Art College of Design. Her work has appeared in music videos for Beck and Less Than Jake, on packaging and in catalogs. Clients include: Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Smart Money, Gyro Worldwide, Henry Holt Publishers, The Village Voice, The Progressive, Boston Magazine, LA Weekly, Atlanta Magazine, Texas Monthly, Jane, CosmoGirl, AKA Advertising, Motion Theory, RCA Records, Design Ranch, San Diego Reader, EUROSGC, TBWA/Chiat Day, Mekanism, San Francisco Chronicle and her work has appeared in American Illustration.

  6. Julia Breckenreid

    Julia Breckenreid lives in Toronto. Her illustration work runs back and forth between graphic and painterly and has garnered recognition from 3x3 Magazine, American Illustration and the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles - most recently being chosen to appear in Lurzer's Archive and featured in the second edition of Taschen's Illustration Now!. She has a wide range of editorial, advertising & design clients, and at present she is busy working on projects for Henry Holt and Penguin Books.

  7. Fernanda Cohen

    Fernanda Cohen is an illustrator based in New York, an SVA graduate, whose clientele includes The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Guardian, MTV, Sony, Random House, Harvard Business Review, Target, Scholastic, Paper, Cosmopolitan, W Hotels, and Continental Airlines among others. Recent projects include her own line of kitchenware Reina Renée in Argentina; her series of post-it notes Les Filles, in France; illustrations on the Christmas windows of the fashion designer Jazmin Chebar’s stores; an ad campaign for UK-based Mama Mio; and the coordination of the American Illustration anniversary show in Buenos Aires. Fernanda is planning a solo exhibition of her latest personal series War of Words in New York in 2008.
                 Cohen’s work has been recognized by Graphis, Society of Illustrators of New York, Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, American Illustration, Communication Arts, Creative Futures, D&AD, Applied Arts, Curvy, Luerzer’ Archive, STEP Inside Design, and 3 x 3.

  8. Isabelle Dervaux

    Playful, sophisticated and witty are some of the adjectives that come to mind when seeing the work of Isabelle Dervaux. Isabelle is an accomplished illustrator who brings her unique perspective to commercial assignments whether in broadcast, print, consumer packaging or the web. A native of France, Isabelle received her education in Art and Art History at the University of Lille. After completing her studies, Dervaux soon made her way to New York where she cultivated a taste for bagels, knishes and New Yorkers, and developed a client list filled with the most well-known names in advertising, retail, publishing and entertainment. She's worked extensively in the United States, Japan and Europe and for everyone from The New Yorker to Barneys New York to British Airways. She has received recognition from American Illustration, Communication Arts, Print and The Society of Publication Designers. Her work is also part of MOMA's permanent collection and she has had several exhibitions of her work in Tokyo. Isabelle now lives with her husband and two children in San Francisco.

  9. Von Glitschka

    Von has worked in the communication arts industry for 20 years. He now refers to himself as an “Illustrative Designer.” In 2002, he started Glitschka Studios, a multi-disciplinary creative firm. His work reflects the symbiotic relationship between design and illustration, thus his modus operandi is that of a hired gun for both in-house art departments and medium to large creative agencies working on projects for such clients as Microsoft, Adobe, Pepsi, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Major League Baseball, Hasbro, Bandai Toys, Merck, Allstate Insurance, Disney, Lifetime Television and HGTV.
                 His exuberant graphics have garnered numerous design and illustration awards and have appeared in such publications as Communication Arts, Society of Illustrators, Graphis, American Illustration, and Logo Lounge. He has authored a book on textures called Crumble.Crackle.Burn and is currently working on his second design book. Glitschka also teaches advanced digital illustration at Chemeketa College and operates the website IllustrationClass.com where visitors can download free tutorials documenting his illustrative design creative process on a variety of diverse project types. Glitschka is often asked to speak and judge at design events nationwide but can usually be found doodling from his home studio in Salem, Oregon.

  10. Mark Heflin

    Mark Heflin is the director of American Illustration and American Photography, the leading juried annuals of contemporary commercial and fine art illustration and photography. Under Mark’s direction the books have been recognized by The Art Directors Club, British Design and Art Direction, The One Show, The AIGA 50 Books/50 Covers, Print Magazine, Communication Arts and I.D. Magazine. As director of AI-AP, Mark revived the Graphic Arts Weekend, a 3-day conference comprised of artist and art department studio tours, speakers, panels and parties. One highlight was bringing Terry Gilliam and Ralph Steadman together as co-keynote speakers. Under his own imprint, Mark published The Times Square Gym, a photography book by John Goodman with an essay by Pete Hamill about the famed boxing gym on 42nd Street that was razed to build the Conde Nast tower.
                 Mark has been on the juries for several professional organizations including The Society of Publication Designers, The Society of Illustrators, and Teatrio Cultural Association International Competition of Illustration. He has curated international traveling exhibits of Contemporary American illustration presented at the Millennium Jubilee in Rome; Le Favolose Matite nel Colorate Mondo an exhibit of women artists in Rome and Naples; and The American Illustration 25th Anniversary Timeline.

  11. Don Kilpatrick

    Don Kilpatrick was raised in Salt Lake City, and spent time living in Kiev and the San Francisco Bay area. Most recently he has moved along with his family to Michigan to teach illustration full-time at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. He has created illustrations for advertising, design, editorial, and motion picture clients, and was involved in the design of the Olympic medal for the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City.
                 He recently served as president of the San Francisco Society of Illustrators, and was a judge for the Society of Illustrators 49th Annual Exhibition. His work has been recognized by industry organizations including AIGA, the New York Society of Illustrators, and has been published in American Illustration, 3x3, and Communications Arts. He is a member of drawger.com, an online blog community of illustrators.
                 Kilpatrick holds a master of arts in illustration from Syracuse University, and a bachelor of fine arts with an illustration emphasis from Utah State University. He recently finished illustrating his first children’s book, You Can’t go to School Naked, to be published in the summer of 2008 by Penguin Books.

  12. Mark T. Smith

    Born in Wilmington, Delaware Mark T. Smith moved to New York City in 1986 to study at Pratt Institute. After matriculating from Pratt he made New York City his home until June 2004 when he relocated to Miami. In addition to his numerous corporate clients, Smith’s work is in the permanent collection of several museums in North America, and the homes of many discerning collectors and celebrities. His artwork is represented internationally. In 2007, Smith has seven solo exhibitions in the United States including Art Basel Miami, CasaDecor Miami and shows in New Orleans, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Washington DC to name a few. Smith has taught at Parsons School of Design for over 10 years. When he’s is not painting, he likes to indulge his interests in travel, 1960’s American muscle cars, and sailing.

  13. Jack Tom

    Jack Tom is from San Francisco. He made his move to New York City in 1978 and worked at McCall’s Magazine as a designer, CBS (working for Lou Dorfsman) as a senior designer, and Business Week as the Graphic Arts Director. As an illustrator he has produced numerous illustrations for New York Magazine, Psychology Today, various Time/Life publications, HBO, Disney Studio, Metlife, Random House, Simon & Schuster, The New York Times, The Nature Conservancy, EPA, Arby’s, American Express, Lucent Technologies, Reader’s Digest, HBO, New York University, American Museum of Natural History, National Geographic Society, The Rockefeller Foundation, Sony Corporation, FedEx, and United Parcel Services. For the past 5 years, Jack has been teaching graphic design and illustration at the University of New Haven and also taught at the New York University Continuing Education Graphic Design Program, Fairfield University and Syracuse University. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Connecticut Art Directors Club (CADC) from 1997-2001 and became the President in 2002.
                 In the past, he has been involved with The Illustration Conference (ICON3 and ICON4) serving as the Bookstore Coordinator and Advisor. He continues his support and involvement with ICON5 as a new Board member and serving as the Education Committee Chair.
